While the festive season is all about goodwill, the teeming masses during the holidays can mean that <strong>Europe\u2019s biggest cities\u2014think London, Paris and Berlin<\/strong>\u2014gets a little full-on.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For plenty of cheer but with fewer crowds, we\u2019ve uncovered some smaller destinations that will get you into the festive spirit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bolzano, Italy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Christmas, tourists head to Italy in droves and the city of<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/issue\/rejuvenate\/a-neapolitan-adventure\/#article-header\">Naples<\/a><strong> <\/strong>is particularly popular due to its live reenactments of the nativity. While Southern Italy has its charm, it can get really crowded. One half of the city consists of stark buildings that stand like morbid monuments to Benito Mussolini. The other is&nbsp; filled with picturesque Gothic buildings that wouldn\u2019t seem out of place in Bavaria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last month of the year, it\u2019s the Gothic quarter that comes alive with&nbsp; Italy\u2019s biggest Christmas market. The city\u2019s Piazza Walther boasts 80 wooden booths offering artisanal delicacies, homemade gifts and warming drinks\u2014the hot apple juice is a great alternative to the ubiquitous gl\u00fchwein. Situated in Alsace, the French city is famous for its chocolate-box buildings that date back to medieval times. These sugary-sweet abodes, with their rustic shutters and wooden beams, become even quainter in the months leading up to Christmas, as every inch is covered in twee decorations. Find the stand offering <em>Bouch\u00e9e \u00e0 la Reine<\/em>, a buttery pastry vol-en-vent, filled with a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with thin slices of beef.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Galway, Ireland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Ireland\u2019s main port, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/travel\/galway?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=November&amp;utm_content=AlternativeFestiveCities&amp;utm_term=UK_TravelGalway\">Galway<\/a>, is a great place to get into the Christmas spirit. Why? The city\u2019s patron saint is St. Nicholas of Myra\u2014the infamous Saint Nick that inspired modern-day Santa Claus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Galway\u2019s Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas is dedicated to its namesake. During Advent, the church hosts several carol concerts. Lit by candlelight, the choir\u2019s sweet harmonies drift throughout the medieval church. To catch this spectacle for yourself, get tickets for the annual show at the Town Hall Theatre, where the Renmore Pantomime Society has entertained Galwegians for more than 40 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malaga, Spain&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a slightly different spin on the usual Christmas tropes, spend the festive period in southern Spain. To make up for the absence of snow and icy chill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/travel\/malaga?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=November&amp;utm_content=AlternativeFestiveCities&amp;utm_term=UK_TravelMalaga\">Malaga<\/a> gets into a festive mood with an abundance of Christmas lights. Wander through the almond trees at Alameda Principal or admire the towering Christmas trees in Malaga\u2019s biggest plazas. The lights stay until King\u2019s Day on January 6\u2014the most significant day in Spain\u2019s holiday celebrations\u2014so you can enjoy them in the new year, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malm\u00f6, Sweden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southern Swedish region of Sk\u00e5ne fully embraces the spirit of Christmas, and nowhere more so than its capital, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/malmo?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=November&amp;utm_content=AlternativeFestiveCities&amp;utm_term=US_TravelMalmo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Malm\u00f6<\/a>. Sweden has a range of unique traditions that you won\u2019t find anywhere else. If you\u2019re visiting in early December, partake in the annual St. Lucia celebrations on December 13. To see the procession, head to Stortorget, Malm\u00f6\u2019s main square.
